For fans of the late and great Indigenous Australian musician Gurrumul, this is a must-see. Two special screenings of the critically acclaimed documentary about the musician’s life, titled Gurrumul, will feature live tribute performances from Sarah Blasko and Paul Kelly.
Blasko will perform at the Sydney screening (on Thursday April 12 at Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace) and Kelly will perform at the Melbourne screening (on Saturday April 14 at The Astor Theatre).
The renown musicians will join director Paul Williams, Gurrumul’s musical collaborator and producer Michael Hohnen, and his brother Jonathan Yunupingu. The events will feature a musical tribute by Jonathan, Michael and Sarah/Paul, who will perform music from Gurrumul’s new album ‘Djarimirri (Child of the Rainbow).
The album will be unveiled on April 13, ahead of the April 25 national release of the documentary, which has been greeted enthusiastically by critics. David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter calls it “profound and transporting,” while The Guardian (and Flicks contributor) reviewer Luke Buckmaster says it is “a rich, dense, stirring and soulful work.”
Celebrated by audiences around the world, Indigenous artist Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu is regarded as one of the most important voices to ever come out of Australia. Blind from birth, he found purpose and meaning through his music, inspired by his community and country on Elcho Island in far North East Arnhem Land.
