There was a flood of news with the unveiling of Microsoft’s new console Xbox One, perhaps the most intriguing to film and TV buffs being the reveal of Steven Spielberg’s executive producer role on an original Halo television series, in partnership with 343 Industries (the current developers of the popular sci-fi first-person shooter) and Xbox Entertainment Studios. Hopefully this will make it easier to mourn the loss of District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s Halo movie that will never be.
Lindelof is not a ‘Mysogenist’
Screenwriter Damon Lindelof made an apology on Twitter for the “gratuitous” display of Alice Eve’s body in Star Trek Into Darkness. Many viewers (especially Trekkies) took offence at the blatant sexual objectification of Carol Marcus, the gifted scientist Eve plays in the film.

Why yes, you Cannes.
Director Steven Soderbergh’s swansong Behind the Candelabra, the Liberace biopic deemed ‘too gay’ for a wide cinematic release, is receiving fair praise in Cannes.
Says The Hollywood Reporter:
“Superbly scripted, brilliantly directed, smart but never smarmy and led by a lead performance by Michael Douglas so good you often forget you’re watching an actor rather than the famous character he’s playing, this is a rarity, a fully realized biographical drama shot through with real feeling and an abundance of sly humor. It’s a winner all around.”
Variety added to that, heralding the “eye-popping biopic” as “the most bigscreen-worthy film that director Steven Soderbergh has made since Che.”
Variety also went nuts for another biopic of sorts, Paolo Sorrentino’s ode to Rome The Great Beauty:
“A densely packed, often astonishing cinematic feast that honours Rome in all its splendour and superficiality… will surprise, perplex and bewitch highbrow audiences yearning for big cinematic feasts.”
