Spit Australian trailer and release date
A good two decades after he made an indelible mark on Australian screen culture (seriously, it just won’t come out) in Gettin’ Square, David Wenham’s Johnny Francis “Spit” Spitieri is returning to the big screen. No, we did not see this particular spin-off coming.
How to watch Spit in Australia
Spit strolls into Australian cinemas with all the unearned, raffish aplomb of its protagonist on March 6, 2025.
Spit (2024)
What is Spit about?
Spit!
Having spent two decades on the run overseas, lovable loser Spit tries to slip in on the quiet by means of a fake passport. It goes about as well as one might suspect, and Spit soon finds himself banged up in a detention centre with a massive target on his back, as old enemies start circling like sharks. But Spit, who is possessed of a distinct but undeniable charm, soon makes new mates among his fellow detainees, so don’t count our fave former junkie out just yet.
The cast of Spit
David Wenham is back as Spit, naturally, along with David Field as corrupt cop (possibly former cop by this stage) Arnie DeViers, Gary Sweet as crimelord Chicka Martin, Helen Thomson as Marion Barrington, and David Roberts as Niall Toole. Newcomers include Arlo Green, Stephen Walker, Bob Franklin, John Walton, Steve Morris, Sami Afuni, and Pallavi Sharda, all in roles yet to be disclosed.
Also back is director Jonathan Teplitzky and writer Chris Nyst, the guys behind the original film.

Why we’re excited about Spit
Well, here’s the thing: the last time a beloved supporting character from a goofy crime caper got his own spin off, the result was The Jesus Rolls, and that wasn’t too crash hot. But never count ol’ Spit out—he’s likely to surprise you. And the fact that the original actor, director, and writer are reuniting for this one make us hopeful. Guardedly hopeful, but hopeful nonetheless.
