The stats for the best-performing Australian films at the box office in 2018 are in, folks – and a bunny rabbit has ran away with the top, er, carrot.
The live action and computer generated family film Peter Rabbit (a US/Australia-co-production) lead the pack, gobbling up $26.7 million from local cinemas.
Sydney-set period drama Ladies in Black came second, taking $11.9 million. The other films in the top five are Breath ($4.6 million), Sweet Country ($2 million) and Swinging Safari ($1.6 million).
It was an excellent year for documentaries, with eight landing in the top 30. The most successful titles were all music-themed: Gurrumul ($990k), Working Class Boy ($823k), André Rieu’s Sydney Town Hall Concert ($789k), Midnight Oil 1984 ($299k) and The Song Keepers ($279k).
The cumulative total for all Australian films at the Australian box office last year hit $57.4 million big ones, marking the third biggest year ever for locally-made features.
However, as trade publication Inside Film recently reported, the down side is that a whopping 70% of that total came from the top two films – Peter Rabbit and Ladies in Black.
