The wild Nicolas Cage movie Mandy will play in Australian cinemas for one night only
The words “bat shit crazy” and “Nicolas Cage” go hand in hand. The prolific American actor is known for eccentric performances in a growing range of weird and wonderful movies.
His latest, Mandy, might not be wonderful but it definitely looks weird.
Following recent screenings at the Melbourne International Film Festival and the Sydney Underground Film Festival, word has arrived that audiences across the country will have the opportunity to see it.
The distributor Madman Films (in association with Monster Fest) announced this week that Mandy will play at cinemas nationwide for one night only, on September 21. Tickets are now on sale for venues across the country.
Just how weird is this film? Put it this way. An enraged and blood-covered Cage at one point gets involved in a brutal chainsaw duel and runs around killing people with an axe.
In his review of Mandy, The AV Club critic A. A. Dowd wrote: “It combines giallo, Clive Barker, Death Wish, prog rock, heavy metal, Heavy Metal, Guy Maddin, Mad Max, the dueling-chainsaw climax of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Nicolas Roeg, and Nicolas Cage at his most bugging-out unhinged.”
Here is the official synopsis, to whet your appetite: “Nicolas Cage hunts down a religious sect in this revenge thriller from the director of Beyond the Black Rainbow. Co-starring Andrea Riseborough (The Death of Stalin), the film’s concept art teases an epic one-on-one chainsaw battle.”
Three words come to mind: bring it on.
