This Is Port Adelaide, a doco on the 150-year-old footy club, is coming to cinemas
2021 could be the year that Australian Rules footy reaches a whole new audience; what with the release of Prime Video’s Making Their Mark, and also an upcoming Port Adelaide documentary.
Whether you’re a die-hard fan, a total newcomer, or maybe even a fierce rival of the long-standing team, This Is Port Adelaide promises to reveal the sporting agony and ecstasy of one of Australia’s oldest and most successful footy clubs.
Directed and produced by Nicole Miller and supported by the Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund, the doco shares passionate first-hand accounts from players and generations of fans, celebrating the “undying connection of the Port Adelaide community”.
It’s hard to remember the last time we saw an Aussie film shot in somber, high-contrast black-and-white – a nice way to add some gravitas to the legacy of one of the AFL’s most divisive teams. “You’re either with ’em or you’re against ’em”, as the below trailer points out.
Special Q&A screenings with the filmmakers and former players of This Is Port Adelaide are taking place from April 16, at Palace cinemas in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and of course Adelaide. You can also scoop up tickets to a regular ol’ screening without a Q&A once the film is released in national cinemas from April 22.
The Adelaide Film Festival’s CEO and creative director Mat Kesting notes that This Is Port Adelaide is for everyone, calling the doco “a universal story about what it means to belong. 2020 was a year that brought unprecedented challenges for us all, but Port always rises to a challenge.”
