Candyman, Candyman, Candyman is now playing in some Australian cinemas
“This is where it all began—the story of Candyman.” We’ve been waiting for ages due to that annoying pandemic, but with those simple first words of its trailer, Nia DaCosta’s Candyman has us ‘hooked’ all over again. Peep (through your fingers) at the trailer below.
Candyman is now playing in Australian cinemas, in states and territories that aren’t locked down. Sadly, many folk in New South Wales and Victoria will have to wait to see this “spiritual sequel” starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Teyonah Parris as an artsy couple who get way too deep into their new neighbourhood’s horrifying history.
If you loved Bernard Rose’s original 1992 horror, you’ll know that it was set in a dilapidated Chicago housing estate: now that burb is gentrified for a new generation but no less scary, plagued by enduring urban legends with serious sting.
The production logos for Universal, MGM and Jordan Peele’s company Monkeypaw Productions are all shown backwards as haunted mirror versions of themselves in the trailer above, so expect a modern subversion of a horror icon who was already pretty damn modern.
And terrifying, although we’ve never seen this many big open windows just asking for a summoning—looks like Candyman will really get around this time, with plenty of potential kills.
