Something trippy this way comes. Your first hint should’ve been that unwieldy title, reminiscent of H.P. Lovecraft if anything.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness promises to be the most mind-bending entry into the MCU yet, with Benedict Cumberbatch’s mystical hero venturing into dangerous alternate realities. Plot details are still shadowy, but all will become clear when the film hits Australian cinemas on May 5.
Director Sam Raimi previously helmed the best Hollywood superhero movies of all time, so it’s somewhat disappointing that the trailer below doesn’t exhibit much of his distinctive, horror-flavoured style.
What we get instead is a sweaty Stephen Strange being punished for his “desecration of reality” by villain Karl Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), before tripping out into wild CGI dimensions previously unknown.
“Things just got out of haaand”, Cumberbatch rasps, hair (and mind) unravelling a bit after a multitude of monster fight scenes and portal journeys.
Fans who have been attentively following the Marvel continuity will be thrilled to see Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) playing a major part in the trailer above. Deliciously, it’s not super clear whether she’s an ally to Strange or another antagonist, complaining to him: “You break the rules and become a hero; I do it and I become the enemy. That doesn’t seem fair.”
Honey…you enslaved a small town into reliving your favourite sitcoms, let’s not forget that. And for an even more shocking franchise crossover, pay attention to the distinctively mellifluous voice in this particular scene;

Well then. Despite being a bit of a mouthful, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could be worth getting excited (or X-cited) about.
