French biopic on the twilight years of impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Set on the French Riviera, 1915, Renoir is tormented by the loss of his wife, the pains of arthritic old age and the news that his son Jean has been wounded in action. But when the young, beautiful Andrée enters his world, the old painter is filled with a new, unexpected energy.

French adaptation of Victor Hugo's 1869 novel (the sixth big-screen version), from the director of Romantics Anonymous. Taking a theatrical tone, the story follows Gwynplaine (Marc-André Grondin) whose facial scar leaves him with a kind of permanent smile.
