Review: New ‘Point Break’ is Abysmal
Confirming exactly what the multiple delays and lack of advance media fanfare indicated, this film is terrible. A series of extreme sports scenes tied together with a silly, nonsensical storyline, it boasts scenes of snowboarding, wingsuiting, surfing, dirt biking and rock climbing. But none of those sequences are filmed anywhere well enough to justify how pointless this film is without them, as director Ericson Core frames everything too tightly and cuts too quickly to ever allow much scope or excitement making it to the screen. Far greater thrills can be found watching GoPro footage on YouTube.
This is allegedly an action film, but aside from the extreme sports, there’s a total of one single fist fight and one single gun fight. They’re both unsatisfying, but the hand-to-hand combat is so disgustingly tight, shaky and choppy I actually had to close my eyes during it. Core appears to be trying to outdo Olivier Megaton for the ugliest, least impactful action direction in all of Hollywood.
Plot-wise, the elements of the original Point Break feel as though they’ve been crowbarred into a different, fantastical tale of bandits completing eight epic daredevil feats around the world, each accompanied by an act of ecological or financial terrorism. The characters are all covered in ugly tattoos and the lead even features a heinous, pointless little topknot for part of the running time. The often snigger-inducing dialogue matches the unpleasant appearances and any promise in the narrative is spoiled through poor writing.
There’s no interesting character development or anything to enjoy in this aside from the extreme sports scenes and they are simply not good enough. If this were an original film, it would be unacceptably bad – as a remake of a hugely beloved action cult classic, it is abysmal to the point of being offensive.
