Review: ‘Sing’ Brings Laughs & Toe-Tapping, But Can’t Hit Higher Notes
Look, if there’s one thing that can bring holiday cheer this festive season it’s a housewife pig fulfilling her dreams of singing Taylor Swift under the dazzling lights of whatever the animal equivalent of Broadway is. At least that’s what Minions-masters Illumination Entertainment’s Sing is banking on, taking the delightful animal world of Zootopia, stripping it of its complex moral teachings, and chucking in a whole lot of absolute pop bangers to boot.
The premise is simple enough for both a kid and a hungover adult to enjoy: a down and out koala called Mr Moon (Matthew McConaughey) needs to save his crumbling theatre and restore his father’s pride. He decides to hold open X Factor: Animal Kingdom-style auditions to star in his next production, dangling a $100,000 in prize money that may or may not exist. In comes a plethora of crooning creatures of every creed, from a chauvinistic mouse (fittingly voiced by Seth MacFarlane) to a punky hedgehog embodying pure first generation Avril Lavigne (Scarlett Johansson) to help save the day and put on The Best Show Ever.
The music from the likes of Katy Perry, Carly Rae Jepsen and Kelly Clarkson, I feel pretty safe saying you’d be a stone cold monster not to enjoy the soundtrack, even more so when it’s coming from a pig dressed like Goldmember. With several uproarious roadblocks and characters popping up along the way (big fan of the light-up squid), Sing will bring a smattering of laughs and hell of a lot of toe-tapping, but fails to hit any higher notes beyond being a cute jukebox musical.
