Top Picks: TV
Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story (May 4)
In this prequel series to the regency pomp and romp of Bridgerton, eyes are drawn away from the absurdly large Bridgerton family to the esteemed Queen Charlotte (portrayed by India Amarteifio as the young Charlotte). Before she was the fierce ruler we see in the present series, who still demonstrates devotion to her ailing husband King George, their love story is an epic tale that changed high society forever.
XO, Kitty (May 18)
Fans of the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy will be happy to know that the TATBILB universe is back with this spin off series about Lara Jean’s spirited little sister Kitty Song Covey (Anna Cathcart). Enrolling in a boarding school in Seoul, Korea, Kitty goes in search to find out more about her late mother, connect with her Korean heritage, and finally get her first kiss from her long-distance boyfriend Dae (Choi Min-young). Shout out to Australian actor Peter Thurnwald who shows up as one of Kitty’s teachers, Alex.
I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson: Season 3 (May 30)
Rejoice, as the hilarious sketch comedy series is back for a new season! Along with a team of comedy guests, actor and co creator Tim Robinson set up increasingly more awkward situations right up until someone leaves. With a distinct observational humour, the mundane is bizarre: no one is doing it like them.
Top Picks: Movies + Specials
Hannah Gadsby: Something Special (May 9)
Australian comedian Hannah Gatsby left audiences in shock and awe with their 2018 comedy special Nanette. After the bait and switch that revealed the horrible vulnerability behind the punch lines, Gadsby is back over five years later with an all new special filmed at the Sydney Opera House.
The Mother (May 12)
As the kids say these days, J Lo is Mother. This action-packed thriller stars Jennifer Lopez as a trained assassin who comes out of hiding to protect her estranged daughter. Taking the “Protective Mother” trope to a whole new level, this movie arrives just in time for Mother’s Day!
Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me (May 16)
Earlier this year, Pamela Anderson was able to tell her story in her own words in Pamela, a love story. Unfortunately, due to her untimely passing in 2007, model, actress and fellow blonde bombshell Anna Nicole Smith was never able to reclaim her story in the same way. Featuring a trove of archive footage, home videos, and interviews with those who were close to her, this new documentary hopefully humanises and offers new insights into the life of yet another misunderstood figure at the mercy of the 90s media storm.
