Best new movies and TV series on Stan: April 2024
Each month, lots of new films and TV shows are added to Stan‘s library. Eliza Janssen surveys the month’s selections and picks for titles most worth watching. For the full list of everything arriving on the platform, scroll down.
Top Picks: TV
Big Mood (March 29)
Stan’s TV lineup for April is chock-full of female friendship sagas, kicking off with this comedy that actually snuck into the end of last month’s slate. Our Derry Girls fave Nicola Coughlan stars opposite Lydia West as life-long besties Maggie and Eddie, who now face their big 3-0’s together. Thing is, Maggie’s bipolar disorder making an unwelcome return, just as both women are in the middle of career crises, Eddie begins to wonder if their close bond is the healthiest thing for both of them.
The Golden Girls: Seasons 1-7 (April 5)
Dorothy: the smart one, the straight-man. Blanche: the horny one, a Southern belle. Rose: the dumb one, a Midwest housewife. And Sophia, the wizened wild card. What else do you need, when it comes to heartstring-tugging, one-liner-spitting sitcom gold? I’ve been getting my GGs kick from Disney+, but now every season of the beloved, surprisingly ahead-of-its-time comedy arrives on Stan, bearing a forkful of life-affirming, constantly hilarious cheesecake in its hand. Thank you for being a friend.
Such Brave Girls (April 18)
Produced by A24, this British dramedy closes out our galstravaganza, introducing us to desperate single mum Deb and her chaotic daughters Josie and Billie. All three women are disastrously unlucky in love, in what’s been described as “a hilarious slice of family dysfunction”. It might just turn out that, as much as the family yearns to escape one another, they’re living among the only people who can put up with their selfish, striving ways.
Top Picks: Movies + Specials
Taken franchise (April 5)
In 2008, Liam Neeson showed off a very particular set of skills—namely, shifting his career of sensible drama roles into action genre greatness. The sequels didn’t have such a significant impact, but they still display the best of Neeson’s dadly badassery, as his useless family keeps getting themselves kidnapped. The actor has said he’s not keen on doing another film in the franchise…but if he did? It’s gotta be called Taken 4 Granted, and have his character faking his own hostage situation in order to teach his ungrateful fam a thing or two about vigilante heroism.
Ghostbusters franchise (April 12)
The first three films in this not-so-scary, spectral comedy franchise arrive on Stan on the same day, meaning you’ll only miss out on the recent Jason Reitman legacy sequels (not such a sad omission, then…). I recently wrote about the necromanced second life of the Ghostbusters franchise, highlighting Slimer as a microcosm of the entire series’ toxic nostalgia. The little green glob is pretty fantastic in his puppety appearance in that iconic, 1984 original film though.
Fantastic Mr Fox (April 16)
A few years ago, Katie Goh ranked all of Wes Anderson’s films for us, and placed this stop-motion delight right at the top. And y’know what? She’s spot on, despite the film’s animated and family-friendly elements making it feel like perhaps a minor work compared to Anderson’s live-action dramas. Here’s what she had to say: “Beyond the stop-motion whimsy lies very grown-up themes: of ageing bitterly, self-disgust and fears of failure. Now that’s a children’s story.”
