Best new movies and TV series on Stan: February 2024
Each month, lots of new films and TV shows are added to Stan‘s library. Eliza Janssen surveys the month’s selections and picks for titles most worth watching. For the full list of everything arriving on the platform, scroll down.
Top Picks: TV
Three Women (February 16)
Drawn from the imagined and semi-biographical portraiture of Lisa Taddeo’s novel, this new drama hones in on women in crises. Three of them, in particular, are on the verge of mid-life, marital, and adolescent breakdowns, unearthing new facets of their own desire and identity. It’s all chronicled by Shailene Woodley’s character, a writer whose own broken family gives her aching insight into the temptations and obstacles womanhood has in store. One of my faves, Betty Gilpin, also puts in an appearance, ensuring that I’ll hit play on all 10 episodes.
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (February 26)
This zombie show is, to put it in a very corny way, completely unkillable. New spin-offs keep respawning on Stan, and this latest one is pitched as an apocalyptic love story between the ever-durable Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his badass, sword-slinging love interest Michonne (Danai Gurira, also serving as a producer). In a world that seems to be rotting around them, is it still possible for the survivors to turn their meaty meet-cute into a sustainable relationship?
Drag Race Season 16 + España All Stars + UK vs. The World Season 2
This month, there will be three separate ongoing Drag Races for the divas to enjoy. There’s a new season of the original American show; the first chance for Spain’s best and draggiest to return for All Stars; and a second chapter in the so-so “Vs. The World” series, pitting UK all stars against dolls from other international seasons. All I have to say is this: yes gawd, mama. Werk the house down boots. Gag on my eleganza and slay the main stage and don’t f**k it up. Sissy that back roll and get an amen and bring back my girls and lipsync for your LIFE. It’s a new day in the fierce werkroom wig reveal for the crown let the music play the inner saboteur library is officially untucked and open okurrr?
Top Picks: Movies + Specials
Jules (February 6)
Released into cinemas last year, think of this gentle sci-fi comedy as a flipped version of E.T.. Instead of bright-eyed munchkins, the film’s alien visitor lands before a trio of more wizened, experienced seniors (Ben Kingsley, Jane Curtin, and Zoe Winters). Thinking they’ve seen everything that their mundane suburban lives have to offer, the titular extra-terrestrial gives them renewed purpose and curiosity about the bigger, stranger world beyond. A sweet, heartwarming watch for your Sunday afternoon, we reckon.
The Descent (February 10)
Arriving on Stan just before Galentine’s Day, this brilliant horror movie is a reminder of the strength of female friendships. Or, alternately, of how crappy it can feel when one of your gal pals leaves you to die at the hands of hungry Albino cave people. Director Neil Marshall makes even the opening, scene-setting moments unbearably tense: his characters are risk-taking women of adventure, whose white-water-rafting and caving voyages lead to terrifying outcomes. The sequel arrives on the streaming platform on the same day, but it simply doesn’t deliver the same sinking feeling in one’s gut.
The Tree of Life (February 17)
Terrence Malick’s impressionistic drama earned him the Palme d’Or at Cannes and some grumbly, frustrated reviews from plenty of confused viewers. If you haven’t experienced the film yet, Stan is now giving you the opportunity. Sean Penn stars as a man sent reeling through time, remembering his ethereal and life-giving mother Jessica Chastain and the more earthy, uncompromising force of his father Brad Pitt. The film operates on multiple, eye-opening levels, with a grand scope of everything from dinosaurs and galaxies to single blades of grass, and pivotal moments in one Texas family’s history.
