A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder: Season 1 (July 1)
Premiering on the same day as its UK release, this new drama casts Wednesday actor Emma Myers as a Nancy Drew type: the only one around willing to fight the power and figure out the truth behind another young girl’s murder. The late girl’s murder has been pinned on her boyfriend, but Myers’ girl detective isn’t so sure, and she’ll speak out against a complacent police department to find the real killer. The show’s based on a series of best-selling novels, so you can rest easy knowing that the mystery will build to a satisfying climax.
Stath Lets Flats (July 2)
All three seasons of this screamingly funny British comedy drop on Stan soon, and I couldn’t be more stoked: it might be one of the most hilarious shows I’ve ever come across. Siblings Jamie and Natasia Demetriou (yep, pre-WWDITS) play a useless realtor and his childish sister, and the nonsensical way they speak will slowly but surely infect your own vocabulary. Even the title sequences are gut-busting! Previously hard to watch in Australia, the show deserves the same fanbase as Peep Show or The Inbetweeners—and it also has an unassumingly sweet heart that those shows lack, with romantic and family plots that’ll surprise you with how much you’ve come to care about these idiotic characters.

The Zone of Interest (July 6)
I’ve never had such varying, rigorous discussions about a movie as this one: Jonathan Glazer’s heartless, uncompromising take on Holocaust cinema. You’ll see no Jews or allied soldiers, no heroism or humanity, in this Oscar-winner’s Auschwitz setting—only cold complicity, with Sandra Hüller turning stomachs as the wife of a Nazi middle manager. The film’s most effective tool lies in how it draws attention to our own wilful ignorance of contemporary evils—there are film-negative sequences that startle the nervous system, and resemble the heat mapping tech being used in drone attacks right now. More of an accusation than a finger-wagging period piece: you need to see it.
Arcadian (July 20)
There’s a new Quiet Place film in cinemas this month, but screw that—wouldn’t you like to see a movie about a resourceful dad and kids surviving in a post-apocalyptic landscape against easily overwhelmed creatures? And wouldn’t it be dope if that dad was Nicolas Cage? A Stan Original, this thriller casts Cage as a dad protecting his sons from the end of the world; they live in relative safety during the day, but violent evil attacks at night, giving the guy a strict timeline to go and rescue his lost youngest kid when the tyke goes missing. Expect some solid parental freakout moments, shabby CGI, and just the right amount of tense thrills to liven up your Saturday night.
Robot Dreams (July 25)
An underdog (and underrobot?) in the latest Best Animated Feature Oscars race, this wordless tale of friendship and time’s cruel passage will make your heart swell. Set in an anthropomorphised vision of 1980s New York, it follows a lonely dog and his mechanical new mate, whose bond is tested by complications beyond their control. Liam Maguren gave it a rave review here: “With absolutely no dialogue, Robot Dreams confidently leans on its visual storytelling and the strength of its animated performances (it’s always surprising how much emotion can be derived from two big hoop eyes and a one-line mouth).”
