Top Picks: TV
Howard’s End (June 4)
Succession has come to an end, but Matthew Macfadyen stays winning! The 2017 mini-series adaptation of E. M. Forster classic, Howard’s End, is coming to Stan at just the right time. A tale of conduct in society, love and secrets at the turn of the century, Macfadyen stars as the wealthy Henry Wilcox, alongside Hayley Atwell as the spirited Margaret Schlegel and Stranger Things runaway favourite Joseph Quinn as the young Leonard Bast.
Year Of (June 9)
From the same creators as Bump, comes a new entry into the Bump-universe (for real, it’s set in the same community). Following a group of students during the final two years at Jubilee High School (the one and the same), a traumatic event leaves them reeling, and on a path of self-discovery. From its imagery and incredibly Gen-Z cast, it’s easy to see Year Of as Stan’s answer to Netflix’s Heartbreak High. But Aussie teens haven’t really had a lot of shows about them over the years, so I say bring it on.
Paul T. Goldman (June 15)
How to describe Paul T. Goldman? It’s not really a documentary, it’s not entirely fiction. It’s true crime, but also true crime satire. Paul T. Goldman isn’t even his real name! And yet, this is his story of when he was scammed by his ex-wife, as detailed in his book-turned-screenplay-turned mini-series where he stars as himself. In a blend of factual talking heads, re-enactments of his life, and behind the scenes footage of the making of the show, this is intriguing and inventive storytelling.
Top Picks: Movies + Specials
The Whale (June 2)
After a long leave of absence from Hollywood which involved a lot of healing, Brendan Fraser’s return to the screen has been a triumphant one—his sweep through awards season for his comeback role included many wins for Best Actor, including the Oscar, and was heart-warming, emotional faire. Although the film itself is highly divisive, in particular in regard to its treatment of fatness, Fraser’s co-star Hong Chau’s performance is a particular stand-out.
Ali (June 2)
Directed by Michael Mann, Will Smith stars as Muhammad Ali in this biopic covering ten years in the life of the famed boxing champion. While the boxing scenes offer opportunities for visually choreographed “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” moments, Mann is also interested in the man behind the champion, and explores his conversion to Islam, speaking out against the Vietnam War, and role in the civil rights movement.
Ghost in the Shell (1995) (June 20)
Anime and manga have boomed in popularity since the pandemic, so I hope the kids are respecting the classics. Ghost in the Shell (no, not the ScarJo one) is a futuristic neo-noir cyberpunk masterpiece about a cyborg officer investigating a mysterious hacker who is stealing human’s memories. Noted as one of the best sci-fi films ever made—and the inspiration for The Matrix—the film has been praised for its stunning visuals, narrative and score.
