Best new movies and TV series on Stan: June 2024

Each month, lots of new films and TV shows are added to Stan‘s library. Eliza Janssen surveys the month’s selections and picks for titles most worth watching. For the full list of everything arriving on the platform, scroll down.

Top Picks: TV

Wild Winter: Season 1 (June 1)

The perfect nature documentary to watch as we shiver into colder months, this National Geographic docuseries examines landscapes that seem inhospitable and hostile at first glance…whilst vibrant, adorable, turbulent life actually churns within them, in the form of sturdy critters such as polar bears, snowy owls, and resilient lil squirrels. Turn up the heater and watch, with every episode dropping on the first day of Winter.

Hotel Cocaine: Season 1 (June 17)

The co-creator of Narcos flexes his muscle for addictive TV once again, drawing us into the cocaine scene of 1970s Miami. There are some small-screen legends here as dogged cops and drugged-up hotel managers, including Danny Pino and Michael Chiklis. The lines will be fat; the lapels will be wide; and you’ll come away after each episode using retro narcos slang you don’t quite understand the meaning of.

Exposure (June 20)

A picture is worth a thousand words, but that’s not enough for troubled photographer Jacs in this scintillating new psychological thriller. Mourning her late bestie, Alice Englert’s character will try to capture the truth of the shocking death through her lens and through precarious new relationships. Essie Davis appears as Jacs’ concerned mum, Heartbreak High star Thomas Weatherall provides support, and director Justin Kurzel is an executive producer, on what looks like a gritty and erotic downward spiral of a story.

Top Picks: Movies + Specials

Priscilla (June 1)

This Presley biopic came out shortly after Baz Luhrmann’s boisterous, OTT Elvis movie, operating in a far more tender minor key and adding to director Sofia Coppola’s catalogue of gilded-cage-girlhood portraits. I was stunned by Cailee Spaeny in the lead role, as a Priscilla who transforms before our eyes from a groomed tween into a self-possessed woman of the 1970s. You can see her coming-of-age building behind her eyes, as Jacob Elordi’s bro-ish Elvis dresses her up in eyeliner and flouncy outfits like his personal doll; something’s gotta give, Coppola’s suffocating filmmaking urges us, and Priscilla’s quiet liberation at the film’s climax feels so earned.

Trailblazers (June 4)

Aussie soccer queens the Matildas suddenly became household names in 2023, punching way above their weight to earn the highest-ever finish of any Australian football team at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Semi-Finals. This celebratory doco starts its scene a little earlier, from FIFA’s first official women’s game to the Matildas’ 2015 struggle for equal pay, all brought to life through talking heads with champions Sam Kerr, Mary Fowler, Steph Catley, and inaugural captain Julie Dolan. The “fight to earn respect”, as one subject puts it in the trailer above, should have you jumping from your seat with a cheer just like that astounding penalty shoot-out last year.

Speed (June 10)

A lean and propulsive classic of 1990s action cinema, this bomb-on-a-bus blockbuster gave Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock breakout roles, and gifted Dennis Hopper one of his most memorable mainstream villainous turns. Did you know Sandy actually learned how to drive a city bus for the film, and got her licence on her first attempt? Keanu did most of his own stunts, too, perhaps lending a sense of grit and credulity to an otherwise over-the-top, high-concept plot.
