Best new movies and TV series on Stan: March 2024
Each month, lots of new films and TV shows are added to Stan‘s library. Eliza Janssen surveys the month’s selections and picks for titles most worth watching. For the full list of everything arriving on the platform, scroll down.
Top Picks: TV
Population: 11 (March 14)
There are far, far too many Australian stories about small rural towns with big rural secrets, and the troubled outsiders who rock up and solve some cold case mystery there. But hey—this one stars Ginsberg from Mad Men! Playing an American whose errant dad goes missing from a tiny, dinky di Australian outback town, Ben Feldman should certainly get to the bottom of whatever sunbaked whodunnit this new series has in store.
Platform 7 (March 21)
Lotta new shows with numerical names arriving on Stan this month. This series is a British four-part drama, starring Jasmine Jobson as a ghost trapped at the titular train station spot. She has no memory of her life—or death for that matter—until a shocking tragedy takes place at the platform she haunts, sending her reeling back into complex memories. It’s based on a well-received thriller novel, so hopefully the ending satisfies us after that tantalising, melancholy set-up.
Top Picks: Movies + Specials
The Cabin in the Woods (March 9)
An absolute treat for horror fans (and, come to think of those, those who can’t stand the genre too). This wrongful box office flop from 2012 skewers the genre’s most tiresome tropes—for instance, look at those dummies in the image above, happily reading from some obviously cursed book! But it’s all in the name of a grand, absorbing conspiracy, that’s both supernatural and chillingly bureaucratic. A pre-fame Chris Hemsworth shows up, but my fave character is the trademark nerdy stoner guy (Fran Kranz), who saves the day with his retractable bong.
Coherence (March 13)
You don’t need a bajillion dollars and a legion of overworked special effects slaves to put out a great sci-fi film. This 2013 super-indie proves it, using a low-key dinner party setting to delve into reality-shaking questions. Filmed over five nights with a cast of besties, the movie really kicks off when a mysterious comet’s trajectory seems to splinter a friendship group into doppelgangers, or mirrored, alternate-universe mimics. The low budget leads to high-tension, and an enjoyably noggin-scratching finale.
Shayda (March 18)
The Opening Night Premiere pick at 2023’s Melbourne International Film Festival, Shayda is a startling and heartstring-tugging tale of a mother’s determination and love. It’s the directorial debut of filmmaker Noora Niasari, with star Zar Amir Ebrahimi raking in acclaim for the titular lead role. If you’ve been craving exceptional, sensitive new Aussie drama, this one’ll get ya right in the gut, following an immigrant mum trying to escape domestic abuse over the course of the Iranian new year.
