Top Picks: TV
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (September 11)
The latest addition to the Walking Dead Universe follows Daryl Dixon after he gets washed ashore to France. As he tries to piece together the mystery of how he ended up here, he creates new connections, including with a child he needs to lead to safety, which will make it harder for him to eventually leave and return home. Although this makes the umpteenth spin-off series from The Walking Dead, this one stars Clémence Poésy, which is reason enough as any to tune in.
Jane the Virgin: Seasons 1—5 (September 21)
When consummate romantic Jane Villanueva gets accidentally inseminated at the gynaecologist’s office, making her pregnant despite never having had sex (a modern-day immaculate conception!), it sets off a truly outrageous series of events. At once a deeply felt romantic comedy and an outlandish telenovela, Jane the Virgin’s story of love, family, and authenticity in the highly polished and manufactured world of Miami hotels and soaps, is the perfect binge to get swept up in.
C*A*U*G*H*T (September 28)
In this new Stan Original series, four Australian soldiers are sent to a war-torn country, only to be captured by freedom fighters. When their hostage video goes viral, they become a little addicted to the fame. With a slew of national and international stars, the trailers are giving Tropic Thunder, the asterisks are giving M*A*S*H… it’s hard to tell if the show is offensive or just “irreverent.” Time will tell!
Top Picks: Movies + Specials
The Farewell (September 6)
Lulu Wang’s The Farewell is a touching and beautiful film about a Chinese family who decide to keep their grandmother (Nai Nai’s) terminal illness a secret from her, and organise a wedding so the family can gather all together one last time without her knowing the real reason why. Starring Awkwafina as Billie, the film explores the connections between grief and family, but also the difficulties in reconciling Eastern and Western life, especially for Chinese-American Billie. Tender, funny and heartbreaking, this is definitely not one to miss.
Revealed – Danielle Laidley: Two Tribes (September 19)
A recent report on anti-trans hate shared by the Trans Justice Project reported that 1 in 2 trans people have experience hate, and 1 in 10 trans people have experienced violence in the last year. In this new documentary, former AFL player and coach Danielle Laidley invites us into her life as she opens up about gender dysphoria, her personal journey of acceptance and finding her place within the LGBTQIA+ community, rebuilding relationships with her family, approaching the AFL as a trans woman, and speaking up about living as her true self.
Widows (September 21)
This Steve McQueen neo-noir heist thriller is a hoot and a half. Featuring a stunningly stacked cast including Viola Davis, Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Rodriguez and Australia’s Elizabeth Debicki as four widows of criminals who come together to execute the heist their husbands were planning. Shout out to a particularly memorable scene with Daniel Kaluuya who brings such an intense, unsettling atmosphere to a basketball court, the tension had me holding my breath in the cinema!
