Top Picks: TV
Quiz: Season 1 (September 5)
My kingdom for a cough! Succession slimeball Matthew Macfadyen and Fleabag’s sis Sian Clifford star in this absorbing retelling of a true story, recounting an infamous cheating incident on the UK’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? If trivia is serious business for you, you might empathise with the scheming of Major Charles Ingram, his wife Diana, and helper Whittock, as they devise a doofus plan to swindle host Chris Tarrant (Michael Sheen) and walk away with a million ill-earned pounds.
The limited series is appropriately anxiety-inducing, hinging on that make-or-break tension we feel when we’re about to get away with something shocking.
From: Season 3 (September 23)
The great Harold Perrineau gets to continue his puzzlebox-solving antics from Lost, in this underrated and creepy sci-fi drama. It’s set in a metaphysical mystery of a small town where nobody can leave and ghoulish critters emerge once the sun goes down. If you caught the end of the last season, you’ll know that escape may finally be on the table for the show’s embattled survivors, so they’ll have to arm themselves to get past those aforementioned beasties. If you haven’t caught up yet? Well, you’ve got a few weeks to get obsessed.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol (September 30)
Poor Dazza: cursed to wander the earth post-zombie-apocalypse, scouring France in the first season of his own Walking Dead spin-off to find new allies and perhaps a way back to the good ol’ US of A. At least he’s not so alone anymore, joined by Melissa McBride’s Carol in the season one finale. Together they’ll turn zombies into a greenish-red paste and stop by Spain, making their survival saga into somewhat of a Euro gap year. There are, frankly, far too many spin-offs and sequels to AMC’s unkillable zombie property, but following Norman Reedus and McBride’s fan fave characters is a safe bet for bleak and bloodthirsty entertainment.

Stop Making Sense (September 1)
Certainly the greatest concert movie of all time, this phenomenon of a film burns down the house with every repeat viewing. I was blessed to catch it in a cinema earlier this year: one dude raced up to the screen to start cutting shapes before David Byrne even began to strum ‘Psycho Killer’, and soon there was a full-fledged dance party goin’ on below his blown-up face. The backup singers, half-time performance from Tom-Tom Club, and big-ass suit are rightfully beloved. Push back the tables, dim the lights, pour out a few drinks and boogie in your living room.
Fallen Leaves (September 2)
Ansa (Alma Pöysti) is a lonely minimum-wage worker, putting her supermarket job at risk everyday by stealing expired food. Holappa (Jussi Vatanen) is in much the same position, letting his alcoholism get to him as he drinks through the days at his construction job. United through the common arts of cinema and karaoke, this pair should easily fit into each other’s lives…but in Swedish director Aki Kaurismäki’s 20th film, fate can be counted upon to screw things up.
A wistful and downhearted sort of rom-com, the Helsinki-set tale looks at the contemporary work-life balance with clear eyes, and features a few gut-punch moments of drama amidst all the moping and longing glances.
Elvis (September 21)
Thank you very much, Baz Luhrmann: your bonkers biopic about the King of Rock ’n’ Roll gave Austin Butler the career breakout he’s currently enjoying, and was only ever so slightly worse than Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla. A saintly shrine to Presley rather than a warts-and-all portrait, the film falters in its decision to centre Elvis’ loony manager Colonel Tom (Tom Hanks, digesting scenery) as our narrator and eyes. But man, is the glitz and harebrained editing on point, sending viewers down a dizzying whorl of classic hits and familiar career beats.
